apache

our 12 1/2 year old best friend, apache, was diagnosed with aggressive lymphoma at the beginning of january.

man, what a good looking dog! i got apache in august of 1999, while we were renovating the house in oxford. i wish i had some digital pictures of when he was a puppy. he was the cutest, fattest, furriest little butterball! he was THE man in my life til pat rayner showed up 5 years later! he quickly went from my dog to our dog.

he was a sweet big brother - he and laurel became BEST buds when we moved to colorado.

pat and i agree that 2010 had to be the best year of his adult life. laurel always wanted to be with him.

i often heard her in the backyard belly laughing - with her dog!

he loved the snow!

and all of our adventures. (i love the bottom left photo - apache is keeping lookout while laurel does her business in the woods. ha!)

sweet boy.

then along came little brother! a family of 5.

always a part of it.

it was a shock to learn how sick he was.

we thought we would have 2 or 3 months to say goodbye. instead, we had 12 days.

i miss you everyday, bud. thanks for loving us so well. we love you!!

That was a fine tribute to a great dog, Gibson! It was great to see all those pictures.

How loved this sweet dog was! When we lost our sweet 10 year old pug, the "Rainbow Bridge" poem brought us so much comfort ... It will warm your heart :) Here it is:

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
